Remembering The 2010 Earthquake

As you may have seen on our Facebook page, I'm back in Haiti for the month! I'll be taking pictures and videos of everything happening in Haiti so we can keep our followers updated! (Are you following us? We are on all social media platforms - Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. They are updated daily so please make sure to follow us!)

January 12th marked the 8th anniversary of the 2010 earthquake. This was the first time I was here to experience the day. Many of the schools were closed and there were memorials all throughout Haiti. At Brit's Home, the children and staff went about their routine. There was music playing throughout the day. (I loved hearing the kids sing We Are the World).

At 4:00, the staff and children gathered together for a vigil. Everyone got dressed up in black and white. Some of the kids wore our blue 'Hope' tshirts. Coach, Mr. Jackson, and Myster Way lead the event, along with Fredo, Delienne, and Marie Cassandre. They talked about what happened the day of the earthquake. Some shared stories and memories. There was also praying, music, and dancing. Shirley and Daphney sang a song for everyone that I later learned was written by a Haitian singer after the earthquake happened. It was very emotional and moving.

Then at 4:53, we all stood in a circle for a moment of silence to remember the 300,000 lives lost in the 7.0 magnitude earthquake. Within that minute, I thought of the children, our staff, and the Gengel family. All who inspire me and motivate me each and every day. I am so lucky to be part of the BLB family and share their story. The whole memorial was really special and I am glad I was able to be apart of it. In Haiti, Everyone was affected by this awful natural disaster. Thousands perished and thousands were left homeless. There are so many stories of heartache but also strength and hope.

Starting tomorrow, we are starting our "Go Blue for Brit" event! Britney's 28th birthday would have been January 21st. Cherylann and Len have told many stories about how much Britney loved her birthday, so each year we continue to celebrate!

Join us by wearing the color blue to celebrate her life. See if you can get your school or office to "Go Blue For Brit", too. We can't wait to see your photos! We will be reposting them all week on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Don't forget to tag us and use the hashtag #BlueforBrit !
