Summers Here At Brits Home

I’m flying out of Haiti on the 6pm flight as I write this blog, I can’t believe it’s been almost 7 years that I’ve been flying in and out of Haiti. I stopped counting after 100 trips into Haiti and then out of Haiti, as I thought it was a milestone. Haiti has improved greatly from 7 years ago, the smell of Death in Port au Prince is gone, the 2.5 million people living in tents are now living in 1 and 2 room houses built my many non-profits from around the world. I was so happy to see Mango season has arrived in Haiti along with the summer heat that I’m not too crazy about… I wish I could describe how succulent the Mango’s taste, like a wet peach that is soft yet so juicy, I think I ate a dozen this past week at Brit’s Home.

At Brit’s Home we don’t send our children back to their extended families for the summer like many other Orphanages do, because most of our kids don’t have Mom’s or Dad’s. This is an Opportunity to give our kids some special love and attention all summer long. For the past week our kids have been doing nothing, that’s right nothing, down time for 2 weeks. Then on Monday morning, July 3rd our children will start summer sessions. They will take 6 courses every morning from Arts and Crafts, ABC Mouse on the computers, Sports, Reading, English as a second language and Chess Competitions, which of course is my favorite. Then there will be 2 groups of our kids going to Taino Beach swimming every other day! Field Trips to Historic sites in Haiti and even a Science Field Trip, how much fun is that.

The Basketball court was finished last Saturday and today our kids got to play their first game on there. It was in the summer of 2011 that my nephew Ross Pentland (Brit’s Cousin) installed it for the kids around BLB would have something to do! The Depot (Garage in Haiti) has reached it’s 28 days of curing the concrete and we are now stripping the plywood and 2/4’s down to see the finished product. We have 7 houses to build this summer and this should finish our Hurricane Relief efforts. The first Britsionary Group coming in July will be lead by Mami Cherylann and will be made up of some of Britney’s Grammar School and High School friends, they will see Brit’s Home for the first time! As you could imagine it will be an emotional week with lots of laughing, loving and of course sharing of Brit’s stories with each other and our staff.

Our 100+ staff members are getting ready for the many Britsionary’s that will be coming to visit Brit’s Home. Mami Love who leads the staff with a tremendous zest for life is the role model for not only our staff but our children too. Gina our Program Director has put together a joyful curriculum of summer activities and with her assistant Misterway, our full time Psychologist who started on May 1st. Misterway is his real name and is one of only 200 Haitian Educated Psychologist in the country and is a Great Asset to Gina and most importantly our kids at Brit’s Home. Francky, Madona and Davidson are busy preparing for 7 groups of Britsionary’s who will visit Brit’s Home for the first, second or even third time. 7 families lives will be change for the better including those who give of themselves to better the lives of the poorest of the poor in Haiti.

It’s going to be a Summer of Fun at Brit’s Home, we hope that you will join us on our journey and continue to follow us on our Facebook Page, or on Instagram as BLBHaiti or on Twitter as Be Like Brit. We want to thank you for helping us help the children of Haiti at Brit’s Home!!! With Faith, Hope and Love!!!
