Short-Term Wooden Home Trips (1-week)

Close to 400,000 people still live in tents and temporary shelters since the devastating 2010 earthquake. Often, entire families will live in these small, 1-room shelters, and are extremely vulnerable to hurricanes, earthquakes, rain, wind, mudslides and theft. Groups will build a new home for a family using 2x4s, plywood and a metal roof. All  of our trips that are available for individuals to sign up, are designated as short-term wooden home trips.

Groups that choose to help construct a wooden home for a family in the surrounding community will be able to meet the family before they start building. During the week, the group will work together with a Haitian foreman (and some laborers) and the majority of the work will involve hammering, sawing, digging, shoveling, etc.

The group will visit the local market near the end of the week and purchase food items to give to the family (this is included in the trip  cost). The group is welcome to purchase additional items if they would  like (not included in the cost of the trip), such as a goat, pots/pans, dishes, clothing, mattresses, etc.

Suggested items that Britsionarys can bring down with them for this project include hammers, twin/full size sheet sets (if the group wants to purchase mattresses), pillows, and non-perishable food items.

At the end of the week, the group will join the family for a blessing of  the house and celebrate as they move into their new home!

Short-Term Permanent Concrete Home Trips

One of the most rewarding projects is to build a permanent home for one of our neighbors.Be Like Brit is building permanent housing in Haiti that is sustainable and “survivable”. These permanent homes are built from locally acquired materials, and are designed to protect against earthquakes and hurricanes.

These trips are for organized groups only (schools, friends/famil y, churches, etc.) of 10-12 people.

Groups that choose to help construct a concrete home for a family in the surrounding community will be able to meet the family before they start building. During the week, the group will work together with Haitian masons and painters to build a permanent home. The majority of the work will involve painting, constructing stone walls, lifting buckets of concrete, shoveling, helping the construction cr ew,  landscaping, etc. At the end of the week, the group will join the family for a blessing of the house and celebrate as they move into their  new home! The cost to build a permanent home designed to withstand earthquakes and hurricanes is an additional $8,500 per group). This covers the cost of the building materials as well as the professional labor (masons and painters), required to help the group construct the home.

Suggested items that Britsionarys can bring down with them for this project include twin/full size sheet sets (if the group wants to purchase  mattresses) and pillows.

Fundraising

Once you apply and are accepted, you can begin the process of fundraising to help support your trip. We will provide you with your personal fundraising website to help you get started. Britsionarys are encouraged to put together creative fundraisers to help them get the necessary funds to make their trip to Haiti. Some ideas include auctions, t-shirts, dinner parties, and yard sales. All of the money you raise will go towards your total deposit, and any additional funds will be donated to Be Like Brit.

Upcoming Trips

We are currently accepting applications. Please see specific dates on the application by clicking the "APPLY NOW" button above.

Background and SORI Checks

In order to volunteer at Brit’s Orphanage, we must run your SORI (sex offender) and criminal background check. We are required to run these checks on anyone that will have direct contact with children. BLB reserves the right to deny Britsionarys from coming on a trip based on the results of these checks.

Please be aware that the charge for background checks is separate from the total cost of your trip and your card will be charged anywhere between $19-$100, depending on the counties you have lived in, and name aliases. If the total amount is greater than $100, we will email you to let you know. The total amount may appear on your credit card as separate charges, due to the collection of certain court fees.
