Fifteen years ago, January 12, 2010, began as a typical Tuesday. Like any other day, we went to work, attended school, kissed our loved ones goodbye, and immersed ourselves in our routines. For the 12 students and 2 professors from Lynn University who were in Haiti with Food For The Poor on a Journey of Hope, the day also started with purpose and anticipation. Their plans included acts of service and connection, visiting Cité Soleil, stopping by Marguerite Nasseau School, and exploring the site of a future housing project for families in need. Their day was filled with hope as they planted trees at Santo Farm Tree Nursery, shared lunch together, and ended their time with laughter and joy at Little Children of Jesus Handicapped Home.
At 4:53 p.m., everything changed. A devastating 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, claiming the lives of more than 300,000 people in an instant. The tremors were felt worldwide, but for us, they hit painfully close to home. In the days and weeks that followed, the uncertainty of Britney’s fate weighed heavily on us. It wasn’t until 33 days later that we received the news we dreaded—Britney had passed away.
Today, we remember Britney with love and honor her enduring legacy in Haiti. We also remember with heavy hearts those who tragically lost their lives alongside her: Christine, Courtney, Stephanie, Dr. Bruno, and Dr. Hartwick from Lynn University. Their commitment to service and compassion lives on through the work we continue in their memory.
We also hold in our hearts the survivors, Lindsay, PJ, Tom, Daniela, Michael, Missy, Nikki, and Julie—whose resilience and courage remind us of the strength of the human spirit.
Honoring the Legacy
The love and support we’ve received over the past 15 years have carried us through our darkest moments. Your kindness and unwavering belief in this mission have made it possible to continue the work Britney loved so much. Today, Brit’s Home stands as a testament to her dream, a sanctuary of hope and opportunity for children in Haiti.
As we commemorate this solemn anniversary, we ask you to join us in reflection. Let us keep those affected by the earthquake in our thoughts and prayers, remembering not only the losses but also the compassion, love, and hope that rose from that tragedy.
Join Us in Remembrance
At 4:53 p.m. today, we invite you to join us for a moment of silence to honor the lives lost and the legacies carried forward.
Follow us on Facebook as we share how our children at Brit’s Home are coming together to mark this day of remembrance. Over the next 33 days, we will take you on a journey—one of hope, desperation, and resilience. Together, we will reflect on the 15 years that have shaped Brit’s Home and the future we are building in Britney’s memory.
Moving Forward with Faith, Hope, and Love
Through your kindness and support, you remind us of the enduring power of faith, hope, and love. As we honor the past and look to the future, we are grateful to walk this journey with you. Together, we continue to carry Britney’s legacy forward and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
With deep gratitude,
Len, Cherylann, Bernie & Richie
